Music with definite crossover appeal.

Born of a musical family, Norman Dello Joio studied with his father and godfather, both accomplished organists. He studied with Bernard Wagenaar and Gaston Dethier at the Institute of Musical Art and later with Paul Hindemith at the Berkshire Music Center and Yale University. He won the Town Hall Composition Award and two successive Guggenheim Fellowships. In 1957, Dello Joio won the Pulitzer Prize for his composition, Meditations on Ecclesiastes. The enormously talented creator of P.D.Q. Bach, Peter Schickele, was born in Ames, Iowa in 1935. At the Juilliard School of Music, Schickele studied with Vincent Persichetti and William Bergsma before embarking on a variegated career in rock, folk and serious music. He has been associated with several recordings by the contemporary singer Joan Baez but he is best known for his "discovery" of P.D.Q. Bach, whose works have served as a hilarious parody of classical music.

"Fashion has moved on since composers like Persichetti and Dello Joio established themselves with a kind of Hindemithian American neo-classicism. They barely get a mention in the more recent textbooks on American music, but their music is always approachable....The most substantial piece is Persichetti's Symphony No. 8 (1967). Everything is neatly turned and expertly scored but rarely memorable. All the same, careful listening to the Andante shows that Persichetti, although too fluent and prolific, was not merely a composer following routines." (Gramophone)
