An off-beat brass recital.

Born in 1945 in Switzerland, Jean-Pierre Chevailler became obsessed by music in early childhood, and began playing brass instruments at the age of eight. At the age of 23 he joined the Radio Suisse Romande brass ensemble as euphonium soloist, a position he held for nine years. In 1978 he obtained a virtuoso diploma from the professional class at the Lausanne Conservatoire. In 1980 Chevailler won the Virtuoso Prize of the Lausanne Conservatoire, the first time the prize had been awarded to a euphonium player. Chevailler makes every effort to expand the repertoire of the euphonium, particularly in the area of classical music. Composers of many nationalities have written works for him. His international reputation has grown with concerts in the Far East, America and Europe. This recording grew out of a fortunate meeting with the British composer and conductor George Lloyd and through it, Jean-Pierre Chevailler demonstrates the enormous possibilities of the euphonium. The musicality and warmth of this instrument open up new solo possibilities for the still under-rated euphonium.

Review:
"This is probably the only euphonium and Orchestra compact disc on the marketJean-Pierre Chevailler, a Swiss euphonium artist, proves that the combination of euphonium and Orchestra is artistically legitimate. The overall sound of the CD is great and the euphonium is always balanced properly with the Orchestra.Performers and teachers should obtain a copy of this recording for their music library."
