Charles Ives: A Portrait in Song

Baritone Bradley Robinson explains what moved him to pursue this recording: "Many know of Ives the musical experimenter, life insurance revolutionist and, at times, the short-tempered eccentric. But there was so much more to the man: Ives the Devoted Son, Loving Husband, Adoring Father, Charity Volunteer, Philosopher, Social Activist, Man of Great Spiritual Convictions, Musical Jokester, Publicity-shunning Philanthropist; and the list goes on. " Robinson invites us to get to know Ives better by seeing how deeply the manner in which he expressed himself musically was influenced by factors which included events he personally experienced, his attitudes towards everyday things, philosophic and/or religious beliefs, and wonderful sense of humor. Bradley Robinson has performed opera, oratorio, and musical theatre throughout the United States to critical acclaim and is on the faculty at the University of Mississippi. His collaborator, pianist Stacy Rodgers, also teaches at the University of Mississippi.

"The 28 songs recorded here were composed between 1894 and 1921 and recorded in two sessions over a 14-year span (2002 and 2016). Ives's songs are so varied and such a huge corpus that it can be a real challenge to program a whole disc; quite rightly, this disc is entitled Charles Ives: A Portrait in Song. Bradley Robinson and Stacy Rodgers opt to provide sets of three to four songs grouped under headings: LIeder; Humor; Religion; Philosphy, Social Commitment; Children; War; and Life Events, with the song General William Booth Enters into Heaven as an addendum/encore. Robinson is ardent in the latter song [Ich grolle nicht], leaving the listener in no doubt as to his anger at the climax before the sweet repose of the final cadence. Stacy Rodgers establishes himself in these songs as an accompanist par excellence In these [Religoius] songs, Bradley Robinson is supremely expressive The booklet notes, by Bradley Robinson himself, are some of the best I have come across, fantastically thorough in their dates and acknowledgement of parent works."
