Performances in the grand tradition of piano playing by Yaroslav Senyshyn.

Steinway Artist Yaroslav Senyshyn is a Canadian born pianist of Ukrainian ancestry. He was a prize pupil of Antonina Yaroshevich, who was a contemporary of Vladimir Horowitz at the Kiev Conservatory. Thus Senyshyn was trained in the grand tradition of piano playing. He was featured in a documentary program about great Canadian pianists and is an active recitalist and concerto soloist, having performed with orchestras around the globe. Lauded by critics as a pianist of "enormous power" (The Washington Post) and for his technical fluency, master of the composer's style, and an understanding of the music" (Fanfare), Dr. Senyshyn is Professor of Music and Moral Philosophy at Simon Fraser University. For his third recording on Albany Records, Senyshyn has chosen two of the most loved concertos for piano: Chopin's Concerto No. 2 and Liszt's Concerto No. 2.

Review:
"The Canadian pianist Yaroslav Senyshyn is Professor of Music and Moral Philosophy at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia. He is an honest to goodness academic philosopher, with the scholarly publications to prove it.…Senyshyn, not surprisingly, is drawn to the Romantic repertoire…As a student of moral philosophy, Senyshyn has the capacity to empathize with the inner lives of the compsoers he performs, giving their works a wholeness that can only come from a deep appreciation for their entire personality. He possesses a big, rich, highly individual tone, while being unafraid to create a very wide dynamic range.…Senyshyn varies his tempos in accordance with the total musical substance of a passage. This is most notable in the last movement of Chopin's Second Concerto, where Senyshyn finds depth in figurations that most pianists just treat as bravuar passage work. Senyshyn's playing really swings, with heart and soul that make the listener want to dance.…If there is a moral, ethical way to interpret each composer correctly, Senyshyn seems be be practicing it.…I only hope that this is one of the rare recordings that brings an artist to wider public awareness. Highly recommended." (Fanfare)
